Diagnostic test, Re write.

William Shakespeare uses figurative language in his play ” Romeo and Juliet” to strengthen his points. Figurative language are phrases that express ideas indirectly. Examples of figurative language are metaphors and personifications. Metaphors are phrases that exaggerate and say what they are not to create effect. An example is Romeo’s speech about consequence awaiting. “Some consequence yet hanging in the stars” the consequence is not actually in the stars. He wants to say that the consequence is in god’s hands (stars).

Another example of metaphor is when Romeo talks about Juliet. ” a snowy dove trooping with crows” Juliet is not a dove but Romeo chooses to say that in a more entertaining way. The metaphor means to say that Juliet is more beauty full then other women like comparing doves to crows.

This is good analysis. The next step is to express a view about the general use of figurative language in Romeo and Juliet and what it adds to the play as a whole. This is something worth discussing before it’s attempted.
