When Simon was holding the rope for Joe to get down there was a lot of teamwork involved. It was very dangerous because If either Joe or Simon falls off, both of the climbers will fall and die in the crevasse. There is no metaphor in this sentence because it was literal. “Any fall requiring a rope to stop it was going to be fatal: neither of us would stand a chance”.The climbers were at high risk. If any person holding a rope falls there is no chances of survival. They will fall and die in the crevasse.

“uncrossable gap had come between us”

Simpson uses a Metaphor to talk about the decline in their relationship, he describes it as an uncrossable gap that developed between them. They do not work together and feel seperate like there is a gap between then, all emotional links are broken. It can not be crossed so there is no way of repairing the relationship in this situation . After Joe broke his leg Simon knew that it was dangerous for both of them to continue descending on the mountain. Joe was disadvantaged and since Joe and Simon had to work together Simon was now at risk if Joe fails he would take Simon with him and die, climbing the mountain is dangerous but now it was extremely dangerous, almost impossible for Joe to survive. Simon believed that Joe will die, he rather not talk about It. This feeling developed a void in between the two climbers, this made it more dangerous as the team work was essential to their survival. “uncrossable gap had come between us” because both of the climbers believed that Joe will die, and rather not talk to avoid this topic.

“I felt a moment of anxiety only minutes before Simon had fallen”

Joe foreshadows anxiety of falling down the crevase. He says that he is afraid of a case of one of them falling and bringing the other with him.

150

“he was dead and I wasn’t, but that was no reason for tormenting myself”

In this quote Joe guesses that Simon feels guilty but right. He feels that even though he cut the rope he did the right thing by saving himself from death,if both of them fell then both could have died or been seriously injured.

“stepped into the freezing water”

this could suggest that Simon needed to wash himself off the bad memories and clean the dirt of him, wash his sins for killing Joe. It could be like trying to start a new clean life like a form of baptism.

141

“The voice was clean sharp and commanding. It was always right”

In this quote joe says that he heard a voice. He says that the voice was commanding and clear on what he has to do, and that he always followed it because it was right. This voice was his survival instinct and his will to survive and it said what he needs to do to get out . If he lisens to it then he wants to live.

“I set about obeying the orders of the voice”

this tells me that the voice took over Joe’s mind and it was controling him and that Joe wanted to survive so he obeyed his survival instinct.

145

“I just stared at them blankly untill the voice called me”

In this quote Joe says he was split in two becasue one side was telling him to give up and relax while the other side was demandning and put him back together so he does not waste time and moves on to survive.

146

“I was looking at the ice figures , the next i was alone again and the cliff, mysteriosly , was behind me”

This quote talks about Joe’s hallucinations which could be a sign of insanity or being exposed to too much cold. He halucinates about seeing ice figures but then he wakes up having superstitious thoughts about the cliff behind him by refering to it as misteriouis. This could show that Joe is feeling very bad and he is loosing his mind.

170

” I burned his ghost yesterday ”

This could mean tat Simon felt like he had got rid of the last of Joe and that when he did the ceremony of buring Joe’s clothes he burned his spirit too and now it is like Joe never existed, and Simon feels like he should be forgoten

pop culture
noun
  1. modern popular culture transmitted via the mass media and aimed particularly at younger people.

Today , people are more interested in how much their favourite pop star paid for their shoes and what brand they are then what is actually happening in the world. You would rather pay £100 for shoes just to look like an idiot from the TV, but you will not donate £3 a month to give a newborn clean water because you’re “saving”.  It is more important that your “friend” is impressed that you have enough money to throw away on materialistic “needs”. When it goes out of fashion you throw it away, together with the money that could have gone to a better place. You will wear your Gucci coat in the heat for  a picture on instagram so that your followers will see you’re serious about style.

Who cares that a child starves every 10 seconds? You can afford to eat.  Kim Kardashian will not tell you to support a charity because donations don’t go straight into her pocket. On the screen she will give you her good example of what to do with money instead. She will take you through the luxuries of her 5 star hotel. Her all-inclusive beach day in her £2000 swimsuit. She will go through all this sacrifice just to show you how to use your money wisely. The infinite comfort of the expensive bikini that even struggles to cover anything.  Download her app and look at her Facebook feed so she can continue working very hard to make the world a better place!

You will come back from school and claim you’re tired, depressed and demotivated. You will look at the TV for inspiration . After a while you will decide that you want to be like those people. So you start a new instagram and post a 1000 selfies so that a modelling company notices you and you become a millionaire overnight. Girls, fame and money  is what your after. Then you can get sponsoring, branded goods for free; cars , parties and the red carpet. Become a king. The next step is to introduce your own clothing range or perfumes or accessories.  These will be produced at a low cost somewhere in China but this does not matter, since you will sell them for a price 200 times their wage.

You will look out the window at people wearing your clothes, but you will not go out and meet them. You will stay inside just in case one of your 1000000000 followers recognises you and wants your signature or picture, after all they are just there to provide you with profit (disposable income you can waste).

One fun  year will go by . Then you will notice a decline in your popularity, not as many likes on your pictures, less profit coming in, closing factories since an extension strategy will not work any more. Your decline will put you back in your family house with your mother and no education to peruse a decent job. Five years later you will be struggling to live on your minimum wage, no one will recognise you any more. You will end up in a place where no one can afford to look up to TV stars. Instead of your daily problems being what brand clothes to wear, the things that will worry you will be: crime , money and food.

You will see the part of the world which the pop culture was created to cover. In the news they will talk of stars instead of giving attention to serious issues, people without money or people forced to peruse crime to make a living.Which makes you question… why do they talk about stars in the news? The royal family does not do anything any more, but when a new child is born everyone cares. Like this the government can do whatever they want, no one will even care about it. Distract you with other things , no one will read a less popular newspaper, even though it may speak the truth.

1 beneath the mountain lakes

Joe and Simon set off to climb siula grande. They have a friend Richard they met in Lima. He takes care of their equipment. The weather is unstable.

Chapter 2 tempting fate

The mood is good. The journey is difficult because of ledges and rocks. They need to spend a night in a bivi. Joe remembers a time where they were biving and the floor collapsed and they were saved by an ice screw.

3 storm at summit

They enjoy the mountain on the top.simon is saved by Joe hanging from a ledge.

Chapter 4 on the edge

They remember Japanese climbers that they seen fall to their death. The mood becomes more tense as Simon dropped in the white-out and got frostbite.

Fate

My fate cries out,

And makes each petty artery in this body

As hardy as the Nemean lion’s nerve.

(Hamlet, 1.4.91), Hamlet

[You live] in the secret parts of Fortune?

O, most true; she is a strumpet.

(Hamlet, 2.2.235), Hamlet to Guildenstern

Our wills and fates do so contrary run

That our devices still are overthrown;

Our thoughts are ours, their ends none of our own.

(Hamlet, 3.2.208), Player King

You must sing a-down a-down,

An you call him a-down-a.

O, how the wheel becomes it! It is the false

steward, that stole his master’s daughter.

(Hamlet, 4.5.176), Ophelia

There’s a special providence in the fall of a sparrow. If it be now, ’tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come: the readiness is all: since no man has aught of what he leaves, what is’t to leave betimes? (Hamlet, 5.2.214), Hamlet to Horatio

1 introduction

2 metaphors

Fortune is a strumpet/ sea of troubles

world’s and flesh’s rage,

Both refer the world as bad

3 rhythm

Iambic pentameter as a symbol of fate

4Rhyme

Ben Johnson ryhymes could mean he is happy

Hamlet doest rhyme he is sad

5rhetorical questions

Than fly to others that we know not of?The undiscover’d country from whose bourn No traveller returns, puzzles the will And makes us rather bear those ills we have Than fly to others that we know not of?

And if no other misery, yet age?.

Both Johnson and Hamlet don’t know what could have happened next. Johnson doest know what life troubles his son could experience while Hamlet comments on running away from those troubles life throws at you. Jonsons son did this but Johnson thinks that undiscovered country is better.

6 Repetition

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

To die: to sleep;

Dylan thomas wants his father to rebel against death while hamlet considers dieing (sleeping).

Poem written die dieing father,

Hamlets father was killed , he loved him he is sad

Dylan Thomas loves his FATEHR AND IS SAD THAT he is dieing

Dylan thomases dad read Shakespeare to his son  and wanted to be a poet but stayed an english teacher

Dylan and Hamlet are in a similar situation 300 years apart they both take something from their fathers

Dylan love for literature, Hamlet throne ,

Hamlet ends up in a worse situation and decides life is not worth it anymore , the view is different because Dylan thomas wants his father to rebell death but hamlet wants to die as if Dylan thomas was persuading Hamlet to not die.

7 Metaphor

My fate cries out,

And makes each petty artery in this body

As hardy as the Nemean lion’s nerve.

Exacted by thy fate, on the just day.

Hamlet relates to the Neamean Lion who is part of the greek mythology and is known for being hard to kill but only destructable from his own claw. In a way that hamlet can only be killed from something that is his fault like his consiousnes that causes him to suicide. Ben jonson however believes that it is fate that decides everything and that fate decided to take his son and it was the right thing to do. Hamlet believes this and thinks that fate has decided that he needs to be like the Nemean lion since only himself can kill him .

8 metaphor

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

It is the false

steward, that stole his master’s daughter.

Dylan thomas thinks that fate is not real and you can cheat it , Therefore those grave men have the power over the way they die and their eyes can see with blinding sight *accurate_ and cheat death. The steward that stole his masters daughter suggests that this is not supposed to happen in the eyes of everyone else. It is something rare but it can happen sometimes.

Different times

1600vs 1950 before they believe in fate and God much more then in 1950.

Betrayal and corruption is portrayed when hamlets uncle kills his brother. It’s Leeds to worse things like revenge

revenge when Hamlet wants to kill the brother of his father for killing him. This led to Hamlet killing Polonius wanting to kill the king. Laertes wanted revenge to protect his honour.

Forgiveness when Hamlet killed Polonius and Laertes forgave him.

Fate is presented when

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Do not die easily

Old age will make it hard

But don’t give up

Wise men know not to give up

And die without trying

They do not give up

Good men die wave by wave

Rebel against dieting

See their whole life

With their blinding eyes

But they dint give up

And my father ithts position.

Don’t let you just die without fighting

Do not go away gently

Fight against dieing.

On my first son
Farewell, thou child of my right hand, and joy;
My sin was too much hope of thee, lov’d boy.
Seven years tho’ wert lent to me, and I thee pay,
Exacted by thy fate, on the just day.
O, could I lose all father now! For why
Will man lament the state he should envy?
To have so soon ‘scap’d world’s and flesh’s rage,
And if no other misery, yet age?
Rest in soft peace, and, ask’d, say, “Here doth lie
Ben Jonson his best piece of poetry.”
For whose sake henceforth all his vows be such,
As what he loves may never like too much.

To be or not to be
To be, or not to be: that is the question: Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep; No more; and by a sleep to say we end The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to, ’tis a consummation Devoutly to be wish’d. To die, to sleep; To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub; For in that sleep of death what dreams may come When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause: there’s the respect That makes calamity of so long life; For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, The oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely, The pangs of despised love, the law’s delay, The insolence of office and the spurns That patient merit of the unworthy takes, When he himself might his quietus make With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear, To grunt and sweat under a weary life, But that the dread of something after death, The undiscover’d country from whose bourn No traveller returns, puzzles the will And makes us rather bear those ills we have Than fly to others that we know not of? Thus conscience does make cowards of us all; And thus the native hue of resolution Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought, And enterprises of great pith and moment With this regard their currents turn awry, And lose the name of action.–Soft you now! The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons Be all my sins remember’d.

Ben Jonson describes why he should celebrate the death of his son in his poem. Hamlet describes the reasons he should not continue living.

My use full child that makes me happy

It was a mistake to believe too much in you

Seven years went by

During one day this happened

I lost all I had why?

I envy other fathers

You have escaped the horrible world early

Rest in peace

My best piece of art Ben jonson
